Product and design

More features can make a product worse

Every feature adds choices and maintenance. Start with the user problem it is meant to solve.

Requests keep arriving

One customer wants an export, sales wants another setting, and operations asks for more controls. Each request may make sense on its own. Together, they can make a product harder to navigate.

Price the extra complexity

A feature brings interface choices, engineering, testing, documentation, support, and long-term maintenance. It also asks users to learn another way to complete their work.

Find the underlying job

Ask who has the problem, how often it appears, what they do today, and what would improve if it were solved. Similar requests may point to one broader need; a single request may be unique to one workflow.

Choose with evidence

Use support patterns, user research, product data, and delivery cost to compare possible work. Then test the smallest change that can show whether the problem is real.
